Message You must be leaving something out since it makes sense as written.

What he is saying is this

DE = q + w Also known as the 1st Law of Thermodynamics,
with a bit of second and third laws thrown in.

A few years ago Smokey Yunick made a small block chevy that ran at about 600 or 1100 degrees can't recall....

Well anyhow it was so cool when it came out, that i looked and just found a bit on it. Read it here very interesting bit of auto history.

This Hot Vapor engine was engineered not to reject so much heat AKA "inefficiency" and it produced "incredible power" and got 50 MPG to boot. I think that was what was being got at in your book, you stated "heat" not HP in your example.
